start with the parts manual, look for remote controls, then gasp when you find the price of the parts.

Any Evinrude Simplex or Johnson Ship Master 2-handle box will work, including the "old" models from the 1950's to the "new" models thru the 1980's. They don't make that type any more. You will need cables specific to those boxes, but they are still available. You will also need a set of cable brackets and bolts to mount on your engine, and OMC-type cable end fittings. You can probably find all that on EBay as well.

EBay has a number of sets with cables and ends in the $165 range. If you can find one with the right length cables that will save you an extra $100.

The ’84 takes a plastic clamshell-type fitting to hold the throttle cable in the housing. The fitting goes where the shut off button is located — which has to be relocated to a special extension off the front which also serves for remote steering hook-up(!) The attachment for the shift cable is also somewhat unique.

The blue Evinrude/Johnson service manuals detail these hookups with pictures — be a good idea to locate the service manual before proceeding. You can often find parts on Ebay, but you have to know what to look for (or what you are looking at).
