Start engine with drive retracted

I have a self generated perception that I'll damage my drive, U-joints, and bellows if I run the engine with drive in the full up trailer position. About once a summer, I start the engine right after splashing the boat off the trailer, and it's never been damaged.

Am I psyching myself out for no reason?

You must be influencing a lot of people. Many feel the same way. Only n unscrupulous shop would recommend running the motor in trailer mode. U-joint jobs are money in the bank.

I don’t think it will hurt the bellows, but it is certainly not good for the U-joints.

I usually forget to trim down the outdrives once or twice a season . . . while not the best thing in the world, it is certainly not a death sentence to the u-joints or related parts. Just not something that you want to make a habit of . . .
