I know the title might be confusing so here is the dilemma I have. Looked at a boat that needed an engine, old engine is out already (overheated poor compression). Called the yard it is stored at and was told I could get them to drop a new long block in and do the rest of the work myself. So I bought the boat. Now I am being told I can't work on the boat. So I would like to move it to a marina that is 4 miles away that will let me work on the boat. If I reinstall the leg and seal up the raw water intake tube. Would I be able to refloat the boat? I know this is probably not the best idea but I just can't bring myself to give this marina any money after lying. The boat is a Bayliner 3255 7.4l mercruiser with Bravo 2 leg. Thanks for any help or replies.

why not trailer it? would be cheaper than paying for someone to hang the drive, etc. and then drop in the water only for you to pay to have it removed.

I agree with Scott . . . have it hauled/trailered from the boat yard.

I hope you got the deal of the century on the boat. Sounds like it may be quite a project. I assume that you have possession of the old engine as well as the boat? :noidea:

Agree trailer, but if the boots are ok, and exhaust Y pipe is still attached, tie the water intake hose up high and it should float.

If the intake hose needs to be a bit higher, use a piece of 1 inch pvc pipe with a clamp to get it higher

I'd think hydraulic trailer is going to possibly be cheaper. Didn't say where you are but assuming there are some local places that would do that.

Otherwise you need the current marina to use their boatlift to get it in the water, you need to figure out how to safely get the boat 4 miles away, and then pay that marine for the haul out. And are you 100% sure the existing engine & drive are seaworthy for that trip?

Thanks for the replies. I did already talk to a boat moving company and they estimated $1200 to go 2 miles. They may need a pilot car etc. Was hoping to do it without that extra step. The boat did come from Roache Harbour with 1 engine about 1hr away, I am assuming it is fine (100% sure? no). I do still have the old engine. Installing the leg is not too much of a problem, and I have free launch since the previous owner paid for round trip. So I could motor it over there without issue. Still not sure how I will go with this.

$1200 is a total ripoff. Should be about $10/foot or $330 ish. Ask around for some others who move boats.

Does seem a bit high, the 3255 has a 11 foot beam which requires an escort, but anyone can be an escort even your self so long as you have signage and lights

I could not find any other transporter in the area that could move the boat. So I am paying the $1200 for a 5 mile trip. Ugg. Now I have some more questions on the engine itself. Will post a new thread.
