I have a 28 ft Power cruiser ,
Twin Volvo Penta duo prop out drives
Bottom never painted , rack stored
Use boat few days of every week , Sleeping aboard at times . My get away condo

A feature no other marina in my area offers , courtesy slips for rack customers when available
Courtesy slips ending . No wet slip available This will effect my boating enjoyment ,

Things are meant too be ,
Found a luxury boating facility 30 miles closer , had a open slip.. Gave my required 30 day notice
Much nicer then present marina , more of our life style , Present marina is a working , charter fishing , fisherman marina

I happen too be anal about my equipment , maintain boat doing most of my own work . I hate too hire anybody. too
do shabby work , paying premium dollars

Bottom has too be painted with anti fowling paint
Lower units must be prepared with anti fowling paint

Yard quoted me a $ 2000 bucks too paint a 28 footer including lower units , 3 coats so they say. 3 days
( this was on phone will visit too get exact costs and how many coats )
I know the yard guys , un skilled labor ,
They cant even put my boat on rack straight , taking short cuts ,

They have a separate area too work on hull & paint bottom with a tarp under boat
Marina offers one free week in work area for rack customers , They will block boat properly so I can paint the bottom ,
I am under a crunch , Have 30 days too get all the work done
I hate too hire them , do shabby work ,

Since bottom never painted it is critical bottom prepped , ( never waxed bottom ) only has rubber skid marks from haul out fork lift , A light green film which happens after a few days in water

Should I bite the bullet whip out that credit card try not too get pissed ,
Figuring cost of materials high end $ 500 bucks .

I am a young 71 ( still think I am 35 ) hate too start something getting tired cause of our hot Fl sun beating down on me ,

How many gallons should I except too use for a clean never painted bottom , 28 footer

One thing too add , at new marina I am close too boat ramp , I have a trailer , my plan is too pull it often , power wash ,
Want no barnacle growth front and behind ( areas you cant see ) around bellows ,

Never looked close , zincs , I see one on each lower unit near bellows , and one on each trim tab, How many zincs can I add not making it over kill ,
Heard of a electrical device too aide ? what is it called , does it work ?
Any zincs too attach too engines or inside engine room ,
Speaking with dock people at new marina , Tons of stern drives in wet slips , Preparing with anti fowling paint critical
He mentioned about BONDING ?? also make sure no electric cords in water around your boat , If I see take it out of water

As usual some thoughts , is appreciated

Mines been bottom painted for years and here’s how I made my peace with it:
1) keep in mind bottom paint is toxic. You will need to be in a full tyvec suit gloves respirator etc.
2) I bet if you bottom paint a 28 ft boat the first thing you will say is never again!

i have found that the yards do a decent job on the hull but a lousy job on I/O drives. So I did my drive myself and let the yard do the hull.

you need a barrier coat (a few layers - two minimum) and then 3 layers of bottom paint

if you add up the 5-6 gallons of barrier coat and the 5-6 gallons of bottom paint you will find your $500 in materials is about half of what you will actually be using. The cost to bottom paint a friends 24' sail boat was just shy of $800 when we did it ourselves and it took a week. the next time, the marina did it for $1200... best $400 ever spent was letting someone else crawl around under the boat for 3 days.

dont forget you need to DA the entire bottom with 80 grit first, prior to the barrier coat
then apply 3 coats of barrier (sanding after last coat)
then apply 3 coats of bottom paint
then address your drives

your choice, however if you dont like the current marina's work, you should inquire with your new marina

Just use your trailer and wash the boat each time you pull it out,
anti fouling is more for boats that live in the water all year round...we have two,

or do it yourself
But l wouldn't bother with it with your circumstances

I painted my boat with the cost of about 2000$. There are still boat painting preparations that can cost on top of my anticipated fees as Paint Stripping, Customization. Doing it yourself can be tedious, but this also means cutting off on the budget
