Ya Scott, the boat is on a wagon, but I wouldn't trust it,......

I've been sweatin' bullets every year when I haul it the 13 miles from where it is, to the launch, 'n back in the fall,.....

You can almost see through the tire's sidewalls,.....
Fortunately, they've held air long enough to make the trip each time,....

If you have a loading dock or can pick up at the shipping companies dock it may be cheaper than you think. I just looked up the receipt for my new base engine from Michigan motorz back in 2016- it was $212 to ship from MI to outside Philly.

Give me a sawzall, adjustable wrench, a screwdriver or two, a pair of pliers, and some sheet metal snips and I can have an engine, outdrive, and transom assembly out of a boat in under an hour. It won’t be pretty, but it’ll be out.

Ha, Scott Danforth , that was my first thought. I'll give the guy a call. Nice looking boat, I'm sure the interior is a disaster. But if the transom and stringers are OK...
Yeah bondo, I'm guessing it's 19' or so like mine, '87-90ish.

ok, going to look at it tomorrow. the guy hasn't answered any of my questions, but it's only 10 minutes away. The key will be getting the engine out and disposing of the hull before my wife leaves me. Guy I know has a gantry about an hour away from the boat, and another hour away from the engine/boat final destination. My plan would be to get the boat in richmond, take it home and repack the bearings and free up the engine, drive to remove engine/put it in truck, then drive it to the river. They'll dispose of the hull for me at the landfill for free, so I'll strip it of nice glastron'y parts and dump it. And I'll still have the trailer. I'll try to get it for $600, but I'll be able to sell trailer and outdrive for more than that most likely.
1. What should I look for on the engine? Any way to tell on the fly if the block/manis are cracked? that would be the only thing that might make this a bad deal. Even that though I'd probably be ahead with the rest of the parts
2. Guessing that I'll be looking at a later 80's early 90's model. will that work for my needs?

So hey, new boat! It's an '89. Interior was indeed rough (yes, that's Trex being used as the floor). Given that, I assume that the stringers are rotted. Nice looking boat back in the day though. Looks strictly fresh water. Didn't spend a ton of time inspecting, since regardless of whatever's wrong with it I'll come out ahead for the $500 I paid. Guy didn't know too much about it, sounds like the owner died. He said he didn't know of anything wrong with it fwiw. It turned over but didn't start. Comes with a couple of goodies, life jackets, skis, perko switch, 2 batteries, etc. A bunch of the fittings are the same as my boat, and the gauges are the same (and in better condition), which is all a bonus. I don't like the look of the exhaust manis/elbows, comments on those? So '89.. . Anything special about the engine? Pre balance shaft, anything else of concern?

That trex floor gives me nightmares!

Hey at least the nice part about the trex boat is that removing the engine will be easy! Probably no need to undo the mount bolts, they are most likely so rotten they aren't holding anything anyway.

OK, so that wasn't bad. 2.5 hours, then another 3 to strip some of the boat. I didn't have a compression tester, and the gas was obviously bad, so I just poured a little gas down the carb. It popped, so at least the ignition is working. Didn't see a reason to screw with it much.

This made me so sad, this was such a nice boat back in the day, much nicer/more substantial than my current. Looks like it was well maintained--until it wasn't.

Took off the riser, to my untrained eye didn't look too bad. What do you think? Looks like a freshwater boat BTW.

IMG_20190513_121516.jpg

The buried treasure in the boat ended up being 6 very nice life jackets, fire extinguisher, flare gun/flares, a gutter cleaning power wand (?), compass, a couple of serviceable looking speakers, depth finder, battery charger. Not too bad.

I couldn't figure out how to get the windshield off. I have zero need for it, but seems a shame to junk it. Also couldn't remove the shifter control box, which is weird since I removed and cleaned it in the past on my boat.

I found a garage that will pull the engine for $50, I'll take that.

I see what you guys are talking about with the transom shield. For some reason I thought the rear went directly into the stringers as well. That would make locating the engine super tough I guess. Thanks for the help. I'm going to start a new thread specifically related to the swap at this point.
