I found this plate just above the starter, but the number does not seem like a serial number. Does anyone know what this is and where else should I look? Thanks

its serial number however the thing is its part of a group so when you go looking for things it will say from like mo10000 to mr5000 like that
if reading right yours is a 90 and up 3.0

that is your serial number plate for your motor. what were you expecting, a 500 character number?

I did think it would be longer, but I thought something was wrong when I couldn't get any of the Merc parts websites to recognize it as a serial number. "No results were found for entered serial number". The guy at the local marina also said it he got no hits when he input that number.

While searching your serial number there was one popular Merc website that wasn't recognizing your 0M014579 serial number but I found a few others that did but I just noticed there's a hiccup in this process.

Your engine serial number (0M014579) comes up as an MERCRUISER 3.0L WPS (< With Power Steering?) 3.0L ALPHA Stern Drive 'Model Number 4111025N2

Running your serial number suggests using just one older engine model parts guide below the one you should be using....Parts guide part number 90-80987096 covers PARTS MANUAL 3.0L/LX Alpha) which would be these 3 links below which again is for an just slightly older engine model,

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury...7XJ?q=0M014579

But using the serial number range finder, this is your actual parts guide you should be using, (90-80486299 PARTS MANUAL, 3.0L Alpha One)
