Could someone please explain why we have black oil leaking from our 40hp 2stroke Mariner with the motor down and no smell of fuel in it should we be concerned is it safe to start it?

Re: Oil leaking

Probably just oil from unburned fuel which is normal. Where is it leaking from?

Re: Oil leaking

I had an '88 johnson 90hp and if I ran it in the driveway with the water muffs it would leak some oil for a few days after. Only a small amount out of the exhaust in the center of the prop and drip down the skag. It's just unburned oil because you are not running at temperature or with load.

Re: Oil leaking

Probably unburnt oil. Make sure your gas/oil mix is correct and use good quality outboard oil. Clean spark plugs.
