Battery Cold Crank Amps question

I was told a recent problem I had with my MerCruiser 40HP outboard motor was because I had the wrong size battery attached. According to the mechanic I needed a minimum 800 CCA battery and I had a 495 CCA.

Can someone please explain what happens with the wrong size battery?

Will it cause the outboard to work HARD to charge the battery?

Thank you,

Ron

Re: Battery Cold Crank Amps question

You need to replace the mechanic, A 495 is plenty of cranking amps. If its to small it will crank it slow, and it depends on what charging stator you have on how fast it recharges, most of the older 40 had around a 5 to 10 amp charging stator so yes it can take some time but it wont make it work any harder.
