I'm thinking of buying another motor and that is a long shaft the transom is 20" from the top to the bottom of the boat

A 20" transom is Long Shaft. A 15" transom is shortshaft. 25" is XL, 30" is XXL

Re: does it make difference to use long shaft or short shaft

I have bought an aluminium 12' open boat for fishing and the dealer says it needs a short shaft ob, I have a 15hp Parsun long shaft i would like to use. The dealer says it will work, I just need to raise the ob on the transom as high as I can. What does he mean?
I'll be using the boat in enclosed waters only, eg rivers lakes etc.
Thanks Guys!

Wills,

All you have to do is build up the transom. If you have a 12' boat most likely the tansom is wood where the motor mounts. Either pull the one off that is on the boat and build a new one or add to it with boards that will raise it 5 ". If it is rated for a short shaft motor that usually means that if you raise the transom 5 inches it will be good for a longshaft motor. Generally a the difference between a short shaft and long shaft is 5" in length. If you don't raise it you will be dragging alot more water and won't get the full power out of your motor.
