My 1998 4-stroke mercury 9.9 hp outboard leaks fuel from the carburetor. When running and when primed with a bulb the leak occurs at the top of the carb. Could this be a stuck float, can I clean or do I need to disassemble?

Re: 9.9hp 4 stroke leaking from carburetor

Usually when a carb is leaking fuel it is due to the needle valve not being able to close all the way. This is either because there is something stuck in the needle seat or the float is not able to push the needle far enough into its seat to stop the fuel flow when the bowl is full. Usually a good cleaning of the carb, especially in the needle seat, will take care of an obstruction. If it is due to the float, you should get a new float and might as well at that point just rebuild the carb to prevent any other near future issues with it.

get an overhaul kit and rebuild the carb ( very easy with basic skills/tools) chances are the needle isn't seating anymore and i would do it sooner than later - you could get stranded or worse start a fire .
