Lower Unit Oil Black?

What could cause my lower unit oil to turn black? I was thinking exhaust leaking into gearcase.

I have the same thing but i was assuming that it was from all the years of oil sitting in the housing if you find anything let me know

Not replacing it frequently can certainly do it.​

Thats what mine looked like before the gearbox s#it it self. If only i had changed it.. dow!!

Better black than yellow....but blue is best.
