Hi all!

Long time reader first time poster. I recently purchased a 9.8 with a 1965 Lonestar as a winter restoration project. I was able to get it started however it appears the water pump will need to be replaced, I gave it sufficient time to warm up knowing some of these came with thermostats installed. I've looked everywhere under the sun, and Google, trying to identify the year so I can order replacement parts. The (SN: A143401) and I've attached images for reference.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Howdy and welcome aboard.

Your actual SN is 0A143401. The leading zero is to match the current Merc SN scheme. It's a 1985 model, but year is not important for Mercs as only the SN can be used for parts ordering.

Parts diagrams for your 1985 9.8m, SN 0A143401 are here - https://www.mercruiserparts.com/7-5-5206550-up

The thermostat would be obvious on top of the exhaust cover.---Port side of the motor.-----They had a spring loaded clamp.----Rubber gasket and allowed you to clean the thermostat with just simple tools.

with the cowl off, its extremely obvious if you have a thermostat or not. of the 3 9.8's I had, only one had a thermostat

Thank you so much for the responses! I had not considered dropping the leading 0 in the SN! I will double check when I get home after work but I'm reasonable sure my unit does not have the thermostat. I looked up images of it and it looks like its easy to spot!
