Are there any older motors to stay away from 1978 - 1980s/ Merks.

A 40 year old anything is only as good as the care and maintenance it has recieved in the last 40 years

Just be aware that Mercury was changing from carbon steel driveshafts to stainless steel in the 1978-79 timeframe. So, you may want to be in the 1980 ish models rather than late 1970’s.
