**it is a 1976**

I was gifted a 1975, or maybe it is a 1976 (serial# 41419184) Mercury 500. The guy told me it runs fine, but the wiring harness is shot. I've determined that the internal and external harness is in fact toast.

Here's the problem I am having. First depending on where I look that serial number comes back as a 1975, and other resources say it is a 1976. IDK if that even matters, maybe 75 and 76 are the same. Now I am trying to figure out what part #'s I need and it is driving me nuts. I've spent countless hours going in circles and have it narrowed down to about 12 different part numbers and I am not even sure if any of them are correct.

Can anyone help me out, please? I have worn myself out mentally trying to figure out the exact parts I need. Again I need the harness that goes from the battery to the engine, then the other side of the harness that is inside the cowl.

The engine harness should be readily avail on the web, I would think. The boat harness is more of an issue.

On the maxrules web site, the '75 Merc 500 shows a single coil and a distributor. The '76 Merc 500 shows 4 coils, and no distributor. Which do you have?

Already you've been a big help. I can now say it is a 1976, it has 4 coils.

OK, punch up your motor on a site like crowleymarine and get a part number for the harnesses. Then do a web search. Surplusunlimited used to have 'em for a good price.

IDK how you did it, but within 5 minutes I have found what I need. I think my mistake was trying to find things by serial number.

Thank you for your help
