Recently bought an aluminum boat with a 4stroke merc, the boat has not had its (first) 50hr service. Hour meter reads 35hrs. What does the service consist of? Is this something I can do or does it need to go to a dealer? Also can it go before 50hrs or slightly over the hours, thinking about using it this year then taking it to the dealer in the fall. Thanks

How old is the motor?

I would change the impeller for peace of mind if it's more that 2 years old or if the boat/motor has been sitting with no use. You can change it in the driveway.

3-4 years old, the impeller should be changed. A year of sitting unused isn't good for the rubber and it can become brittle/hardened causing it to break off vanes.

As posted needs impeller changed, all oils and filters and grease fittings hit a lick with grease gun.Make sure you grease drive shaft splines when impeller is changed.Just a note to drain engine oil before pulling lower unit as some of the early models will self change when you remove unit !!!!!
