Is this something I can do on my own? Need to replace starter but mechanics are all 3 - 4 weeks away from getting to it. Want to get the boat wet!

Replacing a starter is just about as straight forward as it gets.............really only you can determine if you have the skills necessary

just make sure you remove cables from battery first. I bet you can find a couple dozen video's on you tube also..

Sure you can, might not be easy or comfortable.Just disconnect your battery terminals first. If you have to ,make a map on a piece of paper on what wire colors go to what terminals so you can transfer them to the right spots.
But, you can do it with some wrenches and sockets. Just dont over tighten the small wire terminals, they break off easily.

Have mercruiser 3.0 and looks to have a slave solenoid. Replaced old battery cleaned up all connections and tried starting. Smoke came from front of what looks like the starter.

Smoke? You didnt mention that.
You know a locked up 3.0 engine will make a starter motor smoke too, right?

thinking maybe a poor winterizing and a hydro-locked motor. pull the sparkplugs checking for wetness or water when you try to spin the motor.

He lives in NY and it does get real cold there.
Why do I always think the worst?
Maybe its over 30 years in the Auto repair business and just when I think Ive head it all? I go into work the next day and get proven wrong.
