Quick OIL PAN gasket question

I've looked thru the manual but can't seem to find the diagrams of the thin metal pieces that run between the block and the oil pan gasket. They lay right on top of the gasket and get sandwiched in-between the actual block and oil pan gasket.

Anyone know what they're for ? Should they be there or can I toss em for a better seal ?

That's because they don't go between the block and gasket. You install the gasket, then the pan ,then the 2 metal strips, then put the bolts in . They are supports for the pan when you tighten the bolts .

Thanks guys. I learned the hard way. Block out, replacing it now. One thing to remember: don't work on something like this drunk, late at night, and while rushing.

Thanks
