Hi all

I have a v6 mercruiser which had a slight oil leak last summer, i put up with it through the summer and just topped up oil when needed.

Have gone down the boat yard to get ready for the summer yesterday and there is no oil showing on the dipstick and has all leaked in to the bilge.

am i right in thinking that as there is no oil on dipstick the leak has to be the lowest point of the sump (the bung) as if it was anywhere else there would still be some oil showing on the dipstick

thanks in advance

hi bondo

how long would that take to rust through (boat is used in salt water) as the long block was new in 3 years ago

Ayuh,.... Did ya use the old oil pan,..??

A scratch in the paint is all it takes to start rust especially boatin' in the brine,...

if you have a scratch in the paint and you have a bit of salt water in your bilge and the engine cover is closed, it will only take about 8 weeks to rust thru.

Now that is a good question,

i had a mechanic replace the engine and i had the long block shipped directly to his workshop, i know i didn't buy a new oil pan separately.

i now that the longblock isn't a complete engine and i will have to give the supplier a call to see if an oil pan was included

It will probably come down to where he got the engine... some do, some do not.

Get it hot-dip galvanized...

I have successfully repaired (welded patches on after cutting out the rusted sections) a pan of this description, had it galvanised and it's still like brand new. Engine's was a 1995 V6 and the repair was done in 2003.

Is that anything like galvanized Chris? LOL Just tweaking you friend. ;)

Seriously, great idea though. I'd pick up one at a boneyard for 5 bucks and get 'er dipped as Chris suggests!
