Help stalling when put in gear

Helping out another boater. Boat was running great with no issues. Yesterday while on water the boat would stalll when plAced in gear. I disconnected the shift interrupter wire and it would not stall when placed in gear so he was able to drive back to the dock. Question . is there Any quick diagnosis for the cable or interrupted since we are in northern Michigan and no were near my manuals and reference material , and Internet is limited up here lol.. The only info on boat rt now is a 85 merc 350 with alpha one drive can get more if needed . It does have the older style roller interrupter assemble . Thanks

I have the same set up. I was able to clean my switch with contact cleaner and readjust the cables so the roller is in the middle of the groove, then adjust the roller arm with needle nose to get thr right cut out so it would shift. It's bean working all season so far

Ayuh,.... Yer Bud's boat needs a New lower shift cable,...

His is worn out, 'n draggin' causin' the issue,...
