I am having a problem with alpha one gen one trim pistons. I purchased used ones and my problem is that there is not enough travel from the piston to lower the drive to the proper position. The shaft needs to go into the housing about one and a half to two inches more to acheve the proper position. I went to a marine store today thinking the used ones may not be right and was ready to purchase new. I found the brand new ones had the same problem. They were longer. The drive is 1977 to 1982 app. If anyone could give me some insight on this it would be appreciated.

I just got done rebuilding my rams and the manual states there are 2 models. A long one and a short one. Good thing you didnt need the short one and installed the long one or you may have heard some ugly noises. Take a look at the manual it has the part numbers.

If you can get the end caps off rebuilding is a breeze and cheap. I bought a cheapo spanner wrench that folded like the french army. Had to weld it together permanently. Got the job done though. Unlike the french army. Happy independence day.

Thanks for this info. The housing itself is the exact same length. I need the rod itself to retract into the housing at least 1 to 2 inches more. If this is what the manual means by shorter then this may solve the problem. I have also heard there may be some type of spacer on the rod itself that may be restricting it. My old ones are eaten up by electrolysis so rebuilding is not an option. Thanks for taking the time to answer.
