Ok, first post so bear with me.

Merc 140 (S/N 2522192) out of a 1972 Glasspar. Replace original distributor with a Mallory YL673AV which also cross references with part number 19514-1 and 18-5315.

Per manual, gap and dwell is .022 and 31-34* respectively for original setup.

Upon research I find the following specs from a Service Bulletin to use with 19514-1:

MCM 120, 140, 2.5L, 3.0L (S/N 0C856558 and Below) With Prestolite Distributor (which makes Accel, Mallory electronics)
Distributor Part Number: 19514 1 (This is the replacement distributor for the Delco which is NLA).
Distributor Advance: 28?
Initial Timing: 8? BDTC
Total Advance: 36? @ 2100 RPM
Point Gap and Dwell: .016 in. (0.4 mm), 39? - 45?

URL for this info is: http://www.boatfix.com/merc/bullet/95/95_11.PDF

I compared the Mallory vs. the Delco and the cam surface (where points ride against) is markedly bigger. Is that why the new specs are in place.

Just trying to understand before I get this thing on the water.

Thanks for your help.

Ok, got some views but no advice. Mybe I will simplify the question:

For those who have purchased a Mallory (Sierra, etc) distributor for their Merc 140 to replace the original, what gap and dwell settings did you use?

Merc used 2 different distributors Delco and Prestolite. How they compare to the Mallory I can't say but here are the specs on each of mercs distributors.

Ok, thanks. Mallory is a brand of Prestolite, so those specs should jive. Thanks for posting both specs side by side, sure makes it easier to compare.

Mallory is a brand of Prestolite

No, Mallory may have made a copy of a Prestolite distributor, but they are two different companies.
