outdrive problems!!!!!!

i have a 85' 4 cyl mercruiser when i start up and put into gear it revs the engine a little too much before it kicks in. where should i start??? please help got a son who loves the water...

The throttle cable may be out of adjustment.
Disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle linkage at the carb. Put the throttle/shifter control in neutral. Adjust the cable barrel so the cable end pushes the carb linkage lightly to the idle position.
