On my MC-1, (1974 or thereabouts Mercruiser 165 I-6 pre-alpha) amidst the damp, humid darkness, lit by hot halogen lamps, with a huge dose of patience, I re-installed (for the first time) my upper driveshaft housing.

Well, I got back into my garage, enjoying my success, looking forward to a Pilsner Urquell, when it happened: I spotted my nylon washer sitting on the workbench!

Well, I really don't want to disassemble the out drive, so I'm looking to the experts for advice and knowledge so I can decide how to proceed. I had installed new gaskets, 'o' rings, etc, and the shift shaft bushing upgrade kit, so I would probably need to at the very least get one new gasket.

How crucial is that nylon washer, part number 12-39116? What do you guys think: Do I want to pull it apart to get the washer installed?

Thank you for any help and advice!!
