Oil filters do collapse but internally. If the filter media (paper) becomes waterlogged from excess condensation or other means they will collapse. When a can bursts it usually is due to a stuck oil gallery relief valve. Most reputable manufacturers test their designs to huge pressures often 300 psi + way in excess of any auto engine gallery pressure.<br />Off highway equipment has Transmission lube filters often working at these pressures but the can and the crimp to the end plate are of much heavier construction.
