play in the sterring

87 22ft. searay 350 motor ,when i,m idling down the cove the sterring wanders ,i correct it then it does it the other way ,the boat has 235 hours on it . can the sterring be worn out or is there ajustment on the play in it.

I just had an episode where my upper helm started leaking so it allowed air in the system.<br /><br />I lost steering both above and below, not very fun and very expensive becuase the helms were to old to rebuild the newer ones can be..<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />Darren

Sounds like your describing "V-Hull Wondering" if so..Its normal for V-Hull boats to do this at very low speeds.

Yep...Trent is right on the money. My 18 footer powered by MerCruiser does the same thing. There was a lot of discussion on this topic some months ago. You do want to insure all your steering linkages are in good order, however, what you describe is very normal.<br /><br />Walt
