I'm outta my league on this one...so take it for what it's worth....not much!<br /><br />Looking at my 1980 factory manual, I do not see any other component other than the trans cooler where water could get into the trans. fluid. However, there are some very specific steps you must follow when installing a cooler. I'm not sure what year yours is, but assuming it's a series 71 - 72 transmission, be certain to follow the instructions to the letter. My manual says to pressure test the cooler with 40 psi air pressure. Perhaps you didn't apply enough pressure to detect the leak. How many times did you flush the trans fluid? Is it possible what you are seeing is residual contamination of the original trans fluid? It doesn't take much to discolor ATF.<br /><br />Hopefully, Trent, ODDD1, or one of the other MerCruiser specialists will post something of more value.<br /><br />Good luck!<br /><br />Walt<br /><br />PS I just looked at the troubleshooting guide, and the only cure Merc lists for "water in trans. fluid" is to replace the trans oil cooler.
Must be a pretty good size boat.<br /><br />However Im with Walter on this one. Suck out all the tranny fluid and replace. Run and do it again if you have to. <br /><br />Do you have alot of water in the bilge? Touching the tranny? I saw one suck up water one time by this due to a defective tranny.
