I hae a broken anti-ventilation plate on the uper front housing. Welding aluminum around my area is going to be limited. I doubt the group I choose will know what to be careful of.

Can you guys give me some advice on what needs to be done in case the shop doesn't? Upper is off and I will be doing an input seal during the off season.

It's a ~1983 Pre-alpha upper.
Thanks in advance

Got a Picture,..??.......
I can't think of where the Plate would be much of an Issue,....
Except Cosmetically........

This Is the Upper Housing,..?? Right,..??.....

An ebay Replacement would be Cheaper,+ Easier........

your right, it's probably just cosmetic. The big missing part in front is probably from a rock, the second smaller one,....well i will give you one guess who, ...and one guess how. A clue is the guilty DA figures he doesn't have to read ALL the manual?
Won't be the first or last!

Here is pics,...thoughts?

Will do Bondo, thanks for the info. I was looking through the net on welding aluminum and came across this stuff....Dura Fix.

http://durafix.com/

Anybody have any experience with this stuff? I could go crazy with this stuff if it works.

Does it Work,..??..... Ayuh,... Sort of.......

You might stick a couple Small pieces together,.... With a Propane Torch,.....

But it'll take a Good Ox/Ac torch to do anything on your Housing.......
You need a Concentrated Flame to do any Build-up with it........

You could give JB weld a try...no more stress than will be on that it would probably hold.

There was a product a few years ago called alumalloy that had the same properties but was much more expensive.

I did see it do some great things with punctured aluminum radiators. Truck made it back to the road under it's own power, it was a real life saver there. I can't speak about it's use in a structural application though.

I found another one Muggy weld? A little different. Interesting videos. No problem, easy peasy lemon squeezy with this guy. Right! I may get some and fiddle with it some. i have both torches. I'll report back.

Sorry Tommays, you gotta move up from that dial-up and internet explorer -1.0:p

I wouldn't even worry about it........that little piece means nothing....and really does nothing. Saw the other side off, little grinding to make them look even, repaint, and fergetaboutit

On my above post, I need to stress that it really DOES do something, but it would depend on your boat, and the water. What the plate there does is just deflect the water that will want to shoot up at speed from the front part of the lower unit (run your finger fast through water, and you can't see what I mean). You still have plenty left there to deflect, but no one here has seen it in the water at speed. If you were boating in saltwater, and it was spraying water on your trim pump, well THEN ya will have a problem down the line. My speedo pick-up tube sprays a mini side to side rooster tail, but if you don't get back there and look at speed, no one would notice or care. I'd put your plate in that category. I would still ask around town for the local welder though...its a simple fix, and a good welder will wrap wet towels around the inner parts to soak up the heat. You have to remember aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat, and travels FAST. Warps easy, but in your case, I see no problem.

Re: Broken anti-ventilation plate on front of upper housing.

Hey everybody,

Really appreciate the feedback. As it happens, the dura fix guy is right up the road from me. I am supposed to call him tomorrow. See if he is up for a iboat challenge8).

Talked to a welder today here in town and he has had mercs for years. Agreed with Bond-o and others that he could do it but it probably wouldn't be worth it.

Scaaty, I know for a fact the front part that is missing causes a moderate size rooster tail at WOT. Kind of like a jet ski. Maybe i should cut the other side and start a new trendd:)

I do also get some exhaust smell from time to time?

If I do anything with these mystery metals I will post back with findings.
