Attempting to rebuild gimbal but ran into this tough allen. Tried easy outs but rusted sold. Suggestions on removal. Do i have to drill and retap ? Can i use metal saw to cut upper shaft to get ring and housing out? Bellows bearing and all the bushings need replaced. Entire assembly has a ton of play. Im ok with getting a rebuilt assembly but that one allen retainer bolt seems to be holding me back. Any suggestions on how to proceed.

This is on a 1975 Webcraft 888 Sterndrive

Seeing silicone around the transom assembly I would suggest pulling the motor and removing the entire assembly.

Need to apply some heat to it, but not enough to melt the aluminum

yes, you can go in there with the sawzall and cut the steering shaft, you may need a hardened blade. be carefull not to damege the gimbal or the ring when the blade is going too and fro
