Replacing the manifolds and risers on my Mercruiser 233 due to a cooling issue. The new risers are BARR and came without the sleeve in the discharge where the water goes into the rubber connector. Old ones had a sleeve in the last 2-3 inches before water entry into the rubber connector. Is that sleeve necessary? I tried to remove the old one by heating it but no luck. Do I need to return these and get different ones?

I have installed Barr manifold risers several times without any problems. Sometimes the area between the sleeve and inner manifold wall gets packed with rust particles and causes a hot spot that burns the bellows.

Thanks Kenny. That's the information I was needing. Looking at my old manifolds after removing them it doesn't look like new manifolds and risers are going to fix my cooling problem. The old ones really look OK. Lots of rust but no blockage. Sigh.
