Sea water pump question

Is the sea water pump (mounted to the side of the engine) only used for the closed cooling systems or is it like an option on the standard cooling system? Just trying to decide if I need one since the closed systems are so expensive I will just run a standard cooling system.

Ayuh,...... Motors that turn Bravo drives have motor mounted raw water pumps,......

Motors turnin' Alpha drives are fed water by the raw water pump in the drive,......

Has nothin' to do with raw water vs: freshwater cooling,.....
'n once a motor is run on raw water coolin', there's no goin' to freshwater coolin', because the block is contaminated with trash that'll plug the heat exchanger,....
