Sounds like you got the lower shift rod indexed wrong when you put it back together. Pull the drive, separate the two halves, get the lower rod positioned right, and make sure the upper portion is positioned straight ahead when you reassemble. It’s an easy mistake to make, but rest assured, you’ll only make it once. Someone better versed in the terminology can elaborate better.

Do you have the manual? Did you draw it together with the nuts?

Mercruiser Alpha 1 stuck in forward after impeller change.. Please help, I am new at boating, I have a 1990 Maxum 4.3 Mercruiser

You asked this question yesterday and I replied. My reply was a slightly longer version of the reply in the post above this one. The first likely culprit is you did not index the shift shaft properly.
