I am needing to change the motor coupler on a 3.0 mercruiser. It sets in an 88 Sylvan Offshore 22’It looks to be a straight forward removal except the back of the motor sets under the back if the boat to far to get a chain on the picking spot to lift the motor out. Has anyone dealt with this? I don’t see how to get the back of the boat disassembled to gain better access. Please let me know your thoughts and ideas

Looks like it should be pretty easy to pull that out without having to worry about removing anything. Use the front starboard side ring, not the one on the thermostat housing. Then put your chain on an appropriate bolt on the back port side. Adjust your chain to lift according to whatever angle you need.

You know to pull the drive first, right?

Looks very tight to get a chain or engine hoist ,post a wider pic of the stern area. Can the top panel be removed?

Yes the drive is out. That is how I discovered the issue with the shaft and coupler.
my concern is the chain will hit above the motor destroying the white vinyl and aluminum underneath

Is very tight. I’m not seeing a way to remove what’s above it. All riveted in all along it

Any alternative pick points?
a belly strap under the rear?
would it cave the oil pan?

My V6 is even tighter than your 3 litre. I use a spreader bar, much like the one Scott posted a link to....

Motor came out very easily. Rigged it tight and had plenty of room
