gear oil reservoir

can someone please enlighten me on how to remove the sending unit from the gear oil reservoir on a alpha 1 gen two?

Its not designed to come apart, they glue them together

Yes, I see that it is sold as a unit but thought I'd give it a try. Thanks. The sending unit is on a threaded nut inside the reservoir but wasn't sure if anyone knew a trick to get the sending unit and the plunger/float to uncouple or how the plunger makes contact to the sending unit to make the circuit.

Never tore one open to find out how it works, my guess is something moves and it gets gunk built up over time and wont move.

There is a magnet in the float and a reed switch in the post that the float rides on.
I think there is a circle clip that keeps the float on the post.

Exactly this. Thank you Muc. much appreciated. It's back in operation...:thumb:here's a picture showing the inside float with the plastic clip on the post.

the mercruiser gear lube "stuff" comes out of suspension and gums the sensor float on the shaft.

i used to clean mine with a can of brake clean
