happy holidays! I cracked my shift plate today installing it on my manifold on my mercruiser 3.0. 1984 motor 140 181ci. Is there supposed to be a spacer that goes between the shift plate and the manifold? This is probably the 3rd time I have taken it off and for some reason I cracked it this time. I am pretty certain the studs on the head were assembled in their correct place... i don’t think the manual I have covers the shift mechanisms.

Unable to say, but you should be able to lay the plate flat against its mounting surface, and if there is space between the plate and mounting surface then it needs a spacer

Thanks dodge that makes sense.. I’ll pull it back off and check if it’s flat something weird is going on maybe I pinched some wires under it or something. I’ve taken it off a few times and never had an issue with it.
