Thanks GA I’ve ordered a scope and will get to it as soon as it arrives.

someone on another forum suggested that as it’s alloy the flywheel would turn it to power if I let it run but I’m not sure I want to take that chance

Ok so I have a bore scope and a long bendy wire grabber. Plan to locate and extract but if that fails then I plan to remove all the bellhousing bolts, front mounts and slide the engine back away from the bellhousing by an inch to recover the starter nose.

will update once done

For anyone else there is hope if you have the early bellhousing with inspection hole by trim pump under the left mount

Good deal.

If you haven't - Do rough timing before cranking the motor.

Or leave the cover off to pull out possible pieces again.

Initial timing now done but one point to note is that fuel was not getting to the carb due to a failed supply hose. Timing might have been one reason for the damage but in the absence of fuel ?
