My engine is a 1980 Mercruiser 260.

The previous owner upgraded to electronic ignition.

I did a compression test the other day and figured I'd put new plugs in at the same time. Turns out when he upgraded the ignition, he changed the plug he was running.

The boat runs great. Should I go back to the plug called out in the manual, or continue running the plug he had in there?

thanks,
wR

Without knowing which plugs you are running and what is recommended, it is impossible to give educated advise on this one. But my philosophy is if they were working "great" as you stated, why change style now?

I have yet to see how a spark plug knows what is firing the coil that is providing the spark

Stay with the plug specified (BR6FS). The plug has more to do with conditions in the combustion chamber than how the coil is fired to produce the spark.
