Remember that when in gear the torque of the prop will keep the out drive "pinned" to one side. It CANNOT flop back and forth in gear.

Stern drives tend to do the wander back and forth at low speeds. Nature of the beast. Slop in the steering system has nothing to do with it.

No wandering on plane. At very low speed (610 RPM), it tends to stay where it is. That's around 3 knots. Worst at around 1,000 RPM when I try to go 6-7 iknots. I want to take a trip on the Barge Canal, and it would drive me nuts to have to correct all the time, and 3 knots is unbearable. Also might make other boaters wonder if I have been drinking or just plain careless.

Load the back of the boat and make it sit lower in the water, this may not fix it, but should make it better.
