Do you mean the motor transom bracket It wouldn't be unusual for used bracket to be used for a repair
And of course different cowl could happen as well.
One way to tell about the power head is to measure the stroke. 115 is 2.588 140 is 2.860.
There may be numbers on a freeze plug on the power head as well.

So I assume a cross flow would be like 69-89? my last available date. My after market manual lists 120 and 140 84/85 as 2.860. 86-89 2.858.
all others 2.588. Only info I have says 88 thru 110 2.588. 120,140 2.858.

The engine is question is an 83 model, which makes it a crossflow, not a looper. Racerone has the correct info. Back to the original question. It's not unusual for an owner to change cowlings on the crossflow engines. They were the same size for many years. Perhaps his boat was only rated for a 115, so he changed the cowling so it appears that his engine matches the boat capacity. The riveted metal tag on the transom bracket is usually the best way to tell just what the engine is. When you get into older engines, sometimes the powerhead gets changed as a result of catastrophic failure. In that case, you'd want to compare the serial number on the block with that of the transom bracket-it is possible that they are different. Check the casting plug on the top of your current block. The plug is painted over, but has the serial and model id on it and should match the transom bracket. See pic model identification 2.jpg This example is a 1975 135 hp block...
