By the way, that diagram was great, but slightly simplified. I think it gets a bit more complicated in the powerhead, and am I right that there are two pipes that push water up into the powerhead, or is one a lead and the other a return?

Yes, one is a return back to the pump. As I indicated earlier is a recirculating thermostat controlled system. When the 'stat is closed, water pressure opens the check valve and water returns to the pump for recirculation. This goes on until the water is warm enough to open the 'stat. I should add that it is not a simple matter of being open or closed. It constantly monitors the temperature and opens and closes as necessary to maintain proper temp. At idle in cold water it may never open at all, or briefly at most.
