I have a 1979 Evinrude 70 horse outboard (70973R). I am attemting to change the water pump; I have disconnected the lower unit and it drops down abut two inches and will not go any further. I do not want to force the unit down, however there seems to be some relationship between the gear shifter and the lower unit. My question is what is involved in removing the lower unit.

Below the bottom carburetor you'll see a bellcrank assembly where it attaches to the shift rod. There should be a small bolt (7/16" head) under there that releases the shift rod - I think you get at it from the starter motor side. Helps to have a 1/4" drive socket wrench with a long extension and u-join at the tip. It can be a real bugger to get back together - helps to have a colorful vocabulary...
Do not turn the shift rod once you have the unit out. It's threaded into the shift linkage down inside the gearcase and turning it can mess up the adjustments...
- Scott
