Hi, My 1989 Johnson 40 hp power tilt seal is leaking. Its the seal that the chrome shaft goes through.
Ive looked around on this site to find some info about how to change the leaking seal but Ive
come up empty handed.
Is there any information on how to change the seal, or do I need to buy an entire seal kit.
Are there any links on this site.
Cheers

the seal is part of a seal kit. It does not make sense to replace a single seal. The effort to a complete rebuild is marginally more than the effort to apply a band-aid.

you have two seals in the cap. One seal is a u-cup facing downwards. It is designed to keep oil in. The other is a spring loaded shaft seal facing upwards. It is designed to keep water out. A third seal is designed to keep the cap from leaking. In order to replace these seals you have to remove piston from shaft. It does not make sense to do all of that and leave the old check valves, ball bearings, MRV seals, and piston rings. By the time you have the system on your bench with fluid drained and piston off then you have already done the hard part.

check ebay for seal kits and small parts. They can often be found on liquidation aisle for 1/2 price.
