There is a pin near the top of the drive shaft you need to watch for. I threw mine away only to realize later what it was. When re-installing the lower unit you may have to spin the prop a little to get the pin to line up but it will and then the lower will go all the way up. Best of luck. Rick.

Yeah disconnect the bolts holding the gearcase on, it will then drop down a bit revealing the shift rod coupler. Remove the bolt and the gearcase will drop down. As stated, you may need to rotate the drive shaft until the pin is aligned with a slot to let the gearcase drop. My first one I thought the drive shaft splines were seized up there until I learned about the pin. It is a critical piece, holding the carbon seal assembly together preventing water from getting into the powerhead.
