My 14 ft aluminum measures 18.5 inches from the bottom of boat to the top where the engine clamps on. I would like to purchase a new outboard. Do I buy a longshaft or short shaft?I thought a short is suppose to be 15in and a long 20. The motor that came off it measures 17.25in from the clamp to the cavitation plate. Thanks

What is the model number of the motor you are replacing?

I should add......if your old motor was the correct "fit" for your transom......you should purchase a motor of the same shaft length.

Based on your preliminary measurements you might be looking at a shortshaft.
