I have a 1991 Johnson 40 hp Model VJ40ELEIA. Has been a VERY good running motor! Labor Day, it had the number 1 cylinder rod bearing let loose while running around 3/4 throttle. Still runs, but knocks very loudly. Mechanic says that a powerhead exchange is a more economical decision, at this point. The rest of the motor is 100% great, power trim, carbs were rebuilt this past July, new prop in June. Always started and ran great, pushed my 16' side console aluminum fishing boat at 32 mph at 5500 rpm.
My question is- What year Johnson/Evinrude powerhead is an "easy" swap with my powerhead? I have a chance to get an '84 Evinrude 40hp Model- # E40 ELCR (no power trim or VRO) that runs well, but has a lower end issue (though still being used) for a very good price. Compatable?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
