Sparks from under the flywheel...

1972 60hp Evinrude. havn't got it running yet, but i now noticed that while cranking it to try to start it, i see sparks from under the fly wheel. what in the world would cause this?

The magnets could be hitting the coils and need adjusting or the stator plate is not grounded or the points or thier wires are fireing to the flywheel. A good check under the flywheel should tell the story.

It could be bad plug wires or the distributor cap.

There was no 1972 60hp. 1972 was 65hp, 1970 & 1971 were 60hp. They were totally different under the flywheel. So, if we can safely assume it is a 1970 or '71 60hp, I'm going with boobie's theory. Distributor cap or plug wires. The wires often arced out where they exit the cap.
