I replaced the port side CD pack on my 81 Johnson 90 HP with a power pack from a 1985 with coils to match. The power pack was cheap and it already had one post 85 slip on connector coil on it from a previous fix job somewhere although the old man swears he doesnt know how it got there. There is a black stripe on one of the orange power pack leads to the coils on the '85 power pack . Does that go on the upper or lower coil?

Thanks in advance

The power pack should have an orange wire, and an orange/blue wire for the coils. Is it possible that the previous fix job included replacing the original wire with a length of orange/black wire? The orange/blue goes to the lower coil (#4).

Re: 1985 Johnson V4 ignition wiring

The original repair job had one orange wire going to the lower post 85 coil with no quick disconnect connector. I'm assuming its spliced in somewhere. The top coil was original and had the quick disconnect. Both had solid orange wires going to them. I am now using a new Sierra 18-5783 post 85 power pack and two post 85 coils on the port side. The Sierra power pack has a orange wire and a orange/blue ( or black. Its hard to tell ) wire for the coils.

I'm sorry, but that's the only wiring diagram for your motor that I have access to. I'm a bit concerned, because both times that I've looked at it, I've found another error in the diagram. I'm working on a 1979 85hp and the manual wiring diagram shows the orange/blue wire going to the top (#2) coil, which is the opposite of the diagram that I gave you above. Rather than risk damage, I'd wait to see if someone with an oem manual for an '85 responds.

Suspect diagram?

Could someone please verify this is correct? Orange/blue on the bottom or top for an 1985 CD pack. The wiring diagram doesnt seem to be too useful. Anyone got a motor they could just look at and let me know for the left side of the motor?

Of all the wiring diagrams I've ever seen the blue wire always goes to the top (sky) and the green wire to the bottom (grass).

From the color code I'd say 2 & 4 are wrong.

This is why I'm just asking for someone to look at their motor please.

My '85 115 has always had the orange/blue going to the top coil and the orange to the bottom.

Re: 1985 Johnson V4 ignition wiring

The V6 later crossflow engines have three color-coded wires to identify the ignition coils: Orange with blue tracer (sky) is for the upper coils, solid orange for the middle coil and orange with a green (grass) tracer to the bottom coils. The smaller brother V4 uses some of the same V6 logic for their V4 coils: Orange with blue tracer for the upper coil and solid orange for the bottom coils.
