had to replace shift cable on the fly this spring during a trip. only cable available was proper length, however, was new style instead of original. was able to mount it into the remote housing with a little modification, now im dropping forward gear at low rpm, and have to work the throttle to stay in forward gear until i reach higher rpm. my question, do i need to simply adjust the linkage, or do i need to go back to the original style shift cable?

I'd go back to the orginal cable and adjust it properly. You may run into some g/c probs if you already don't have them.
