I have a 1963 18 hp Johnson. Is the water supposed to pee out of the side of the engine like most newer outboards or does the water come out of the exhaust. I took it out and ran it for about 30 minutes pretty hard and it ran great. The water was coming out of the exhaust. Also, I have read some places that the fuel mixture was supposed to be 24:1 and 50:1. Which mixture should I be running?

24:1 and water comes out with the exhaust. As long as it is you are fine.

If you don't know the age/history of the impeller changing it would be a good thing.

And if think it's running hot then feel the head after a good run. You should be able to touch it easily for a few seconds. And water should not sizzle on it when splashed on it.

The impeller was recently replaced. I would also like to put an electric start on this motor, any chance to find a good used starter and solenoid for a reasonable price? Thanks for all the info!!!

There around but rare. You'll have to scour websites. You could also try some of these places as they sell used parts at some:

sea-way. Com
outboard-parts. Com
marinepartsoutlet. Com
laingsoutboards. Com
tcoutboard. Com
fairwindsmarina. com
salvagemarine. com
