I have a 1976 Evinrude 15hp, but after doing research and some comments on here. The 74-76 were bad motors. I’m looking at selling the 15 and buying a 77 or newer 9.9. Thoughts and opinions? Thx

If a 9.9 is adequate and you are happy with another very old motor go for it

Vic S. I actually got the 76 15 hp dialed in and running good. So I think I’m gonna stay with the 76 and deal with the points and condensers as opposed to CDI ignition. Maybe upgrade the head later to the 77 head to help with fouling the plugs.,

I have two 40 hp motors with the lo tension magneto similar to your 15 hp. I don't think changing the head will help with fouling plugs. In my experience it has to do with the ignition system.

Actually, go to Leeroy’s ramblings and read up on it. In 77 they change the head to of more of a scalloped shape. It was designed to keep the fuel mist from fouling the plugs. There was actually a kit from the dealer to upgrade the 15hp. It’s a pretty interesting read. That’s a great site

Okay I never knew about that. I do know that I can get a lot more running time from ngk plugs. Until I read about it on leeroys ramblings I was changing champion plugs constantly.

Actually it was a weaker magneto system as well,
but the design of the head also led to the plugs fouling. In the article it talks about orientation of the ground electrode on the plug kinda like the Evinrude Etec
