I just bout a first boat. It's an old one i plan on fixing up. A 1976 Cajun mach1 bass boat with a 1960 Evinrude 40 hp outboard 2 cylinder motor. Model #35520.

Motor is not running. I tested for spark and found none. It's probably points/coil etc. I will be pulling flywheel soon. I do have several questions.
1) Does anyone know where parts can be found for this motor?
2) Whats the proper fuel/oil mixture?
3) Proper size plugs? Currently has champion J8.
4) correct point gaps?
5) I have read around net that people have gotten points, condenser etc. from Napa Does anyone know the actual part numbers.

Also I've read that lower unit should have gear oil changed how is this done and what is correct weight of gear oil.

I am mechanically inclined but this is my first time owning a boat or working on a outboard motor.

Thanks!

Points gap: 0.020"
Plug gap 0.030"
Plug, was originally J4J, current replacement L4J(champion's chart puts L8J in everything, way too hot a plug)
Fuel ratio was speced as 24:1, however it has Anti-friction Bearings throughout and can run 50:1. TCW-3 oil
Gear Oil - BRP Hi VIs is fine, or Mercury Gear Oil
Iboats should have Ignition Parts for that engine
Replace water pump Impeller

L4J ????? C'mon, that's a long reach plug, AND obsolete. Correct current plug is J4C. Or J6C if you have to.

Azcards, you are standing in the iboats store. We can't send you off to the competition.

Oops:embarassed:. as you can see I haven't the hang of Champion's Relabeling. J4J was burned into my Memory, and the slightly hotter J6J...

On my dads old OMCs, I always bought AC plugs, as I had and still have a Distrust of the Champion Brand.

The oil drain / fill plug is on the BOTTOM front of the gearcase.----Same screw as the upper vent plug.------Do NOT remove the phillips head screw.-----It is the pivot pin for shifter.-----Fill oil from the bottom till it comes out the vent.-----Motor to be in normal running position.

Thank you for the replies. And the link to the PDF. Very much appreciated.
Before I pulled flywheel I did compression test on both cylinders. One is 105 other one around 103. From reading these forums they should be around 120? I did put a little 2 cycle oil in cylinders before testing.

Got flywheel off and tested both coils on positive and negative terminals ohms measured 0.09 on both and neg/pos terminals to coil tower shows open loop on both. So I assume coils are bad.

Thanks

Should be a few K-Ohms at the coil tower to ground. Like 4 to 7 K. (They vary).

Those compression numbers are fine.

43.9 cubic inch displacement
40 hp @4500 rpm
4000 - 5000 WOT range
21:12 gear ratio
Automatic Choke
Recirculating Thermostatically controlled Cooling System
Adjustable Hi and Low speed Mixture

I would like to order a few things. Such as plugs, impeller, points, condensers, coils steering cable, propeller, carb kit, gaskets and fuel pump kit.
Problem I'm having is it seems the iboat shop can't find my model, make or year. years only go back to 1968 on search page. Link that goes to engine parts older than 68 leads to a page 404 error.

I got bottom unit out impeller didn't look to bad and no water in gear oil that I could see. I let it drain out from upper regular screw plug. I'm not sure what screw I shouldn't remove. I will post a pic below.

Got a few more questions regarding motor. A few parts that I don't know what it is and cut wires that I don't know if they are needed or not.

??----Post #5 clearly says that the drain / fill screw is the same as the vent screw.------And that it is on the bottom front of the gearcase.-----Make sure you understand filling the gearcase from the bottom till it comes out the vent screw !
